We are so pleased to offer an academically rich, academy-style after-school program at Pleasantville Middle School: The Green Panther Academy. This new program at Pleasantville Middle School is organized by the Pleasantville Middle School PTA.  Winter classes start Jan 14.

FAQs:

  • Classes start the week of January 14 and run for 8 sessions (Students enrolled in Math Olympiad take note: this program runs on a different schedule).  Classes take place Monday-Thursday.
  • Classes take place immediately following dismissal at the times indicated.  The complete list of dates can be found on the registration page. 
  • Attendance will be taken at every session; a coordinator is assigned to this program. 
  •  All winter classes are offered at a flat fee of $165.00.
  • A minimum number of 10 students is required to run a class; a class may be canceled if enrollment does not meet this threshold.

It’s a Wrap!  Wrapped Foods from Around the World 

Coach: Curious-on-Hudson Instructor Gina Pagan

In this unit, students will learn about and prepare dishes from around the world that are made to be served inside their own wrappers. Recipes include wontons, Vietnamese summer rolls, tortillas, Thai lettuce cups and pierogi — something for every palette. As per all cooking classes, students are taught culinary skills including hygiene, chopping, braising, and in this particular class, how to wrap and fold enclosures. The dishes are all vegetarian and nut free. This class does contain foods prepared with dairy, wheat and other ingredients.

Chess Team

Coach: Curious-on-Hudson Instructor

Chess is the classic game that develops spatial thinking and strategies and builds focused concentration. Taught by a professional chess instructor, the class is geared for all levels of chess players. The benefits that go far beyond the board itself. Learn skills and group instruction, individual game analysis, opening preparation and endgame technique plus lots of time to play.

Intro to Photography

Coach:  Dondre Green, Curious-on-Hudson 

For students who have an interest in learning the technical as well as the artful aspects of photography, this class will introduce them to the fundamentals of photography, using either a film or a digital camera. Students become proficient in the use of their cameras including aperture, shutter speed, and exposure. Each class includes both a lesson and exercises. Students shoot on their own each week and bring images to class for discussion. Students should bring their own cameras to this class; this can be a standard point-and-shoot digital camera or a digital SLR.  Phone cameras also acceptable.

Graphic Novel Workshop

Coach: Joseph Morciglio, Curious-on-Hudson

Graphic novels are the intersection of visual art and storytelling – an immensely popular genre for both fiction and non-fiction alike. This class focuses on what makes a graphic novel compelling, visually appealing and how various forms of graphic novels differ. Students will develop stories and artwork into a cohesive short story form. Taught by an experienced graphic novel author and artist.

Hip-Hop Dance

Coach: Amanda Delle Bovi, Pleasantville Middle School

Coach Delle Bovi teaches this class for any student interested in hip hop dance style. The dance class is a very structured and regimented experience for middle school students of all dance levels. The gocus is on hip hop!  Students also study choreography and each week the choreography is expanded upon and practiced.

Web Design and Coding 

Coach: Curious-on-Hudson Instructor

In this class students learn what’s behind the web – something we use everyday to access over one billion websites – as well as how to create their own web designs and pages.  They start with understanding what factors make a web page compelling and easy to use? Then design your own web site using a tool like Weebly and then move on to making your own pages in HTML/CSS. This class introduces you the architecture of the web and makes it possible for students to create their own websites.

Exploring Abstract Art

Coach: Ruth Chapman

Taking inspiration from famous artists like Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky as well as artists working today like Jen Stark, we’ll create our own artworks. We’ll use the elements of art–line, color, shape, form, value, space, and texture-–to create abstract compositions. We’ll explore the progression of abstract art from partial to total abstraction. Students will work with a variety of art supplies such as watercolor and tempera paints, India ink, oil pastels and chalk pastels, art markers, printmaking and collage materials.
