We are so pleased to offer an academically rich, academy-style after-school program at Pleasantville Middle School: The Green Panther Academy. This new program at Pleasantville Middle School is organized by the Pleasantville Middle School PTA.  Fall classes start 09/24.

FAQs:

  • Classes start the week of September 24 and run for 8 sessions (with the exception of Math Olympiad, which runs for 20 sessions). Classes take place Monday-Thursday.
  • Classes take place immediately following dismissal at the times indicated.  The complete list of dates can be found on the registration page. 
  • Attendance will be taken at every session; an onsite Curious-on-Hudson coordinator will oversee this program.
  •  All classes are offered at a flat fee of $165.00*
  • A minimum number of 8 students is required to run a class; a class may be canceled if enrollment does not meet this threshold.

Cooking from a Victory Garden 

Coach: Curious-on-Hudson Instructor

A cooking class drawing inspiration from the victory gardens of the WWII era, where backyard gardens were encouraged as a means to increase food production. The class will utilize fresh ingredients from the school garden to make inspired vegetarian recipes.  This program will teach basic cooking skills and participants will taste and sample foods for take home. Recipes are shared with families to make at home. The program is vegetarian and nut-free (however, it is not recommended for students with other food allergies as it does incorporate wheat, milk, eggs, etc. in the cooking).

Chess Team

Coach: Curious-on-Hudson Instructor

Chess is the classic game that develops spatial thinking and strategies and builds focused concentration. Taught by a professional chess instructor, the class is geared for all levels of chess players. The benefits that go far beyond the board itself. Learn skills and group instruction, individual game analysis, opening preparation and endgame technique plus lots of time to play.

Math Olympiad

Coach: Curious-on-Hudson

The program is for students who love mathematics and are always hungry for more math challenges, even those impossible to solve, and they approach problems with grit, determination and inquiry.  The learner who has strong math skills and who is always hungry for more math challenges, will especially thrive in this creative, friendly, collaborative problem-solving environment.  Members take five monthly contests from November to March (no traveling is required).  The contests typically provide an incentive for students to intensify their personal study of math, especially when among like-minded peers.  Please note that this class is meant to provide students with accelerated and advanced math challenge, not for extra math practice to reinforce skills.  Learn more about Math Olympiad @http://www.moems.org/program.htm

Acting & Improv ARC Stages

Coach:  ARC Stages, Pleasantville

Students discover the magic of Theatre and Improvisation with Arc Stages! Theatre exercises and improvisation games build technique and confidence on stage and off. Through creative exploration, including a vocal and physical warm up, fun in improvisational skills, truth in creating emotion, games and more! This interactive, theatrical experience will culminate in an open classroom, to share the theatre and improv skills students learn in class with their families.

Filmmaking: From Theme to Documentary

Coach: Curious-on-Hudson Instructor

Learn what goes into making a documentary while collaboratively producing one as a group. Together the class will identify and develop a theme for a documentary. Students will collaborate on content and share the production process to create a short final film.

Zumba: Global Rhythms

Develop an appreciation for the varying global rhythms from around the world while at the same time practice movement in sync with music in this high energy class.

The fascinating design and architecture elements of the Star Wars franchise wrapped up in a Minecraft world. Students work to creative imaginative, Star Wars themed environments within the Minecraft game.

Exploring Art of Medieval Times

Traveling back to medieval times, we’ll create artwork of kings and queens, castles and shields, dragons and unicorns, medieval costumes, stained glass windows, and more.
