How much do you love the Harry Potter novels? As much as our instructor, Jackie Bastardi? She's an engineer who has dreamed up a class to explore the themes (and variations) of Harry Potter is games, projects and challenges.
It's time to take back Hogwarts. Let's get it together as we design our defenses against the dark arts. We'll need a trebuchet, catapult and perhaps a tower to keep watch on our turf. Using some pretty awesome engineering skills, we'll design some fortifications, build them, use them and figure out how to make them better. Depending on how motivated our team is, we could take it outside for some serious launch testing! Let's not skip a game on Quidditch on the beach (with our own homemade sticks, of course).
It's a theme you're all familiar with come to life with your own ideas and skills.
Taught by Jackie Bastardi
Jackie is a graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology with a degree in mechanical engineering, and is the current STEM/STEAM Program Development Manager at Curious-on-Hudson.
While doing her undergrad work, she did two co-ops/internships; one was in the field of geotechnical, environmental and construction engineering testing, and the other was in manufacturing engineering. For her senior design project, she and her team built a low cost computer controlled hydraulic nanomaniulator, which is a fancy name for a device that can move a tool very small distances. She is from Briarcliff Manor, NY and began teaching at Curious-on-Hudson in the summer of 2014. She now develops STEAM curriculum for after school programs and summer camps.
Jackie enjoys sharing her love for firguring out how things work with young people.
